1. How do I get a library card?

Library cards are issued free to anyone who lives in or owns property in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. Students attending an educational institution within the District are considered residents.

A library card offers access to the entire collection of the Library System to everyone, regardless of age. Parents assume responsibility for items borrowed by their children. Parents are required to sign a statement of responsibility at the time of registration. Parental consent is required to obtain a library card for children age 15 and under.

To obtain a library card, apply at any branch or the Bookmobile. Remember to bring proof of identification and proof of your current local address.

Persons living outside the District may use our services upon payment of a non-resident's fee or may be eligible for a card through the BC One Card program.

2. I have moved. How do I change my personal information?

Please ask the circulation staff to change your personal information such as address and/or telephone number. You may be asked for proof of your new address.

3. I have changed my last name. Do I need a new card?

Yes. If you have legally changed your name, you need to re-register. Please bring two pieces of identification, one with your current local address.

4. What payment methods do you offer?

The Library only accepts cash or a personal cheque.

5. I lost an item and paid for it. Now I have just found it under the couch. What should I do?

Return the item to the Library where you paid for it. If the item is returned within 12 months of the date you paid for it, we will gladly refund your money.

6. Can I photocopy and fax at the Library?

The Library charges $0.20 per page of printing or photocopying. The Library does not offer a fax service.

7. How many items may I borrow?

The Library does not limit the total number of items that may be borrowed. A limit on the borrowing of media (CDs, DVDs, MP3) does occur in order to allow other patrons a chance to enjoy these new formats.

In order to give all of our patrons a reasonable chance to enjoy popular topics and items, the Library has a few borrowing guidelines.

3 Quick Read books per library card.

3 magazines per title. No limit on the total number of magazines borrowed.
Example: 3 Oprah, 3 Maxim, 3 Runner's World, 3 New Yorker magazines

3 non-fiction books in one subject area. No limit on the total number of books borrowed.
Example: 3 building a deck books, 3 knitting books, 3 World War II books

2 non-fiction Children's books in one subject area. No limit on the total number of books borrowed.
Example: 2 books on RCMP history, 2 books on dogs, 2 books on dinosaurs

3 interlibrary loan books per library card.

The Library also issues seasonal limits due to the popularity of items.
Example: 2 Children's Hallowe'en books, 2 Easter books, 2 Valentine's Day books

8. The book I want is older and I don't see it in the catalogue? Can I still read it?

Yes, use the Ask A Librarian email form to submit your request or talk to a staff member. The Library will try to borrow the book from another library in British Columbia. As requests vary in delivery, usually from 2 to 8 weeks, your patience is appreciated. The loan period is often limited to 2 weeks.

9. Do you accept recommendations for new items?

The Library encourages and considers all patron suggestions. While the Library endeavors to have something for everyone, please note that the Library simply cannot purchase every suggestion received.
